General Emergency Preparedness

This section was designed to assist you in being prepared for various emergency situations.  It is our hope that making people aware of what they can do to become better prepared will assist themselves, their families, and emergency response personnel in the event of an emergency.

Evacuation Preparedness
Y
ou should consider the following items in the event that you need to evacuate your home:

  • One day’s clothing and shoes for each family member including outerwear

  • Personal care products (toothbrush, feminine hygiene products, diapers)
  • Towels
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Flashlight, extra batteries, whistle
  • Granola bars/trail mix
  • Cash
  • Cell phones/smart devices
  • Safety Deposit Box keys
  • Hearing Aids, CPAP devices
  • Eyeglasses
  • Battery Bank with charging cords
  • Copies of important documents: medical and prescription information, passports, birth and naturalization certificates, driver's licenses, and insurance papers.
  • Pet health and microchip certificates
  • Pet needs (treats, food, water dishes, medications, bed, kennel/cat carrier)
  • Car Jumper Cables

 

In-Car Preparedness
The following items should be considered in the event you are stranded in or need to take shelter in your car:

  • Bottled water
  • Food (granola/energy bars)
  • First aid kit
  • White distress flag
  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • Flares/light sticks
  • Blanket or sleeping bag (Emergency reflective blanket)
  • Jumper cables
  • Shovel
  • Maps

 

At-Home Preparedness
In the event that you need to take shelter in your home the following items should be considered:

  • Water: at least 1 gallon, per person, per day

  • Can opener (non-electric)
  • Battery powered radio
  • ABC-type fire extinguisher
  • Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Prescription medications
  • Wired telephone (not cordless)
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight & battery powered lantern
  • 3-day supply of canned or dried foods
  • 3-day supply of baby food and formula

 

Basic Emergency Survival Supply Kit (including Winter Season)

  • A gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation  
  • Food, at least a three-day non-perishable supply
  • Infant formula and diapers
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Prescription medications and glasses
  • Mess kits, (cups, plates and utensils), paper towels
  • Pet food and extra water for your pets
  • First aid kit
  • Personal sanitation articles
  • Feminine supplies if required
  • NOAA Weather Radio  and extra batteries
  • USB Charger for your phone, smartphone or Pad
  • USB Battery bank for phones and pads
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper – Diluted 9 parts water to 1 part bleach, as a disinfectant. - 16 drops of household liquid bleach per gallon of water as emergency water treatment.  Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners
  • Moist towelettes
  • Garbage bags
  • Plastic ties
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Cash or traveler’s checks and change
  • Fire Extinguisher
