Proposed Donation to ASLPT

The New London Conservation Commission proposes a $50,000 donation from the Conservation Land Acquisition Fund (CLAF) to the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust (ASLPT) to support the permanent protection of the Ohler property on Pleasant Street (Tax Map 048-002-001). It is important to clarify that this funding does not involve purchasing the land itself from the Ohler family. Instead, ASLPT, with support from the Town of New London and other partners, will acquire a conservation easement, allowing the Ohler family to retain ownership while permanently protecting the land from future development. This critical parcel plays a key role in safeguarding Pleasant Lake, preserving wildlife habitat, and maintaining local trail connections. The CLAF, funded by the New London taxpayers, exists specifically to support the protection of vital conservation lands—such as open space, forests, wetlands, aquifers, and scenic viewsheds—through land purchases or conservation easements. This project represents a strategic and fiscally responsible opportunity for the Commission to participate in a highly successful $700,000 conservation effort for a modest $50,000 investment, leveraging strong partnerships to achieve lasting community benefit.
